Tip 1. Know Your Shams

The most beautiful beds consist of the same basic element, shams! Knowing what they are and where they go on a bed will get you started on the right foot. Shams can get a little confusing depending on what look you’re going for, and whether you're designing a king or queen bed, so here’s some tips to clear things up.

2. Know Your Accent Pillows

An accent pillow is a decorative pillow, and they come in many different shapes. Each type can come in a variety of sizes as well. We like to stick with one style per bed, but we always recommend having a few different styles on hand so you change up the look from time to time!

3. Let the Flat Sheet be Seen

For a layered effect, put your flat sheet on right side down. Pull it all the way up to the top of the bed, then fold back the sheet with your coverlet/duvet to reveal the right side of the flat sheet. This looks especially luxurious if you have some embroidered detail on the top of the flat sheet as seen in this photo. This brings us to our next tip...

4. Embroidered Details & Borders are EVERYTHING

For a high-end look, we recommend adding embroidered details or decorative borders to your bedding. At James Décor, we have a large variety of designs and colors to choose from, and our designers can help you choose just the right ones for a gorgeous custom look. Well executed design always has excellent detail work.

5. Mix in Pattern

Adding pattern to your bedding creates eye-catching layers and feels more curated. You can mix solid embroidered pieces with florals, or small stripes with a geometric pattern. Have fun with it! This is where your personality can come through.

6. Add Layers of Texture

As we transition to fall, texture is a great way to cozy up your bedroom. A fur throw draped at the foot of the bed can add a great element of texture. You can also add a bed scarf. A bed scarf is different from a throw as it spans the entire length of the bed at the foot and is purely decorative. Try a cashmere blanket, a personal comforter, or even fold a velvet coverlet at the bottom of the bed to add a different layer of texture. This is a great way to break up a lot of patterns on a bed. Stop into our showroom to browse a variety of faux fur and knit throws.

7. Make it Monogrammed

Your bedroom is a very personal place, so why not monogram your bedding? The look is ultra chic and adds a special element to remind you that you, (and everyone else) that your bedding is customized for you. This also a great idea for a wedding gift. Give the bride and groom something really lovely with a set of monogrammed sheets.

8. Use High-End Linen Wash

You wash your sheets a lot, and you want them to last a long time. That’s why at James Decor, we carry Le Blanc linen wash in our showroom. It doesn’t contain the harsh chemicals as other detergents that cause your linens to break down over time. It’s also designed to be used with cold water, which is eco-friendly and less harsh than hot water. Bonus: it smells heavenly! You can find several scents to choose from in our showroom.
