5 Ways to Style Your Coffee Table

How to put the centerpiece of the living room to use without sacrificing style.

1. Take a Page from our Book

Displaying books on the coffee table may be traditional, but there’s a reason. A coffee table book full of stunning photography can be a conversation starter or a way to pass the time as guests wait for dinner to be served. If you want to keep up with the times, subscribe to a well-designed magazine. You’ll get a shiny, new magazine in your mailbox each month to proudly display on the coffee table. After you receive several, stack them neatly with your favorite issue on top.

2. Be of Service

It’s natural to set snacks or drinks on the coffee table while entertaining guests, but don’t risk ruining it with crumbs and water rings. If you want to police coasters all night, that’s an option. Why not make it easy by serving everything on a trendy tray? There’s a tray for every style, and we even have lots of options in our showroom. Set a flower vase in the tray or use it to keep odds and ends in place when it’s off duty from entertaining.

3. Get it Down to an Art

For those who don’t want their coffee table to be so interactive, this is your chance to make an art statement. Display a sculpture or other décor that matches your style. Guests will ooh and aah at the tasteful design. Choose a piece that makes a statement to get the conversation started.

image2.jpg

4. Defy Expectations

If you want to keep everyone guessing, choose something unexpected to place on your coffee table. A backgammon set, for example, is out of the norm but can double as décor and a form of entertainment. Break the mold when it comes to using your coffee table.

5. Let your personality shine

Choose a memento that represents yourself to fill any open space on your coffee table. If you like traveling, what about displaying your collection of postcards or that souvenir you picked up in the Bahamas? If you’re into photography, set out a vintage camera from an antique shop. Add some personal flair to make a space your own.

5 Ways to Glam up Your Home

Bring some sophisticated shine to your spaces with these tips!

1. Put the Pedal to the Metal

Pops of metal add a whole new dimension to a space. As you can see in the elegant living rooms below, this material can be incorporated in limitless ways. Light fixtures, sculptures, and even furniture with metallic touches can add just the right amount of shine to a space. The good news is, there are few design styles metal doesn’t mix with. Find it in glamorous spaces or industrial spaces. You can mix and match within a space, too -- word on the street is mixed metals are all the rage.

2. Go for a Glitter Effect

While visions of childhood craft rooms covered in an impossible amount of glitter may come to mind when broaching the topic, it’s possible for glitter to be grown up too. The key? Don’t overdo it. The glittery light fixture in the dining room below steals the show without getting gaudy. Use it as the focal point in the room.

3. Add Refined Rocks

If the glitter trend seems to be a little too much, the geode and crystal trend might fit better with your personal taste. They are a more subtle, natural take on bling. Small details made of geodes and crystals are elegant ways to incorporate this trend. Placing an actual geode or crystal sculpture anywhere that needs a little sparkle is an effortless way to add some glamour to a space. This is a newer trend, and we predict it’s here to stay for a while!

4. Make it Crystal Clear

Try working in clear crystal elements and acrylic into your space for some extra glam. They take up little visual spaces because of their transparent quality, but still add just the right amount of pizazz.

5. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

There’s no doubt that the reflective quality of mirrors can crank up the glam in a space. Try using mirrored accessories and furniture for a fun spin on things. They will reflect light into your room and add a little sparkle.

Fresh Ways to Use Plaid in Your Home

Our Designers Dish on Why You Should be Styling with Plaid Now!

Mood board by James Home Décor

Pair Traditional Plaids with Modern Silhouettes

The unique shapes and modern lines paired with traditional tartan can create an interesting juxtaposition that’s eye catching and dynamic. We love how unexpected this look is!

Tartan_Wall.jpg
PlaidModChair.jpg

Mix Multiple Plaids

You might think that mixing several plaids would give you a mad hatter effect, but actually the look can be very tasteful if done correctly. Mix and match plaids that are in the same color family (analogous colors), or use complementary colors, like orange and blue. Pair the collection with a neutral plaid to ground the mix. We like to keep the mixing to around three or four plaids to avoid things getting too crazy.

PlaidHeadBoard.jpg
PLaidBedroom2.jpg

Play with Menswear Plaids

Think of the houndstooths, checks, windowpanes, and tattersall that have been used in menswear for years. These plaid patterns can feel more formal and less “lumberjacky”, and look great in more traditional spaces, paired with other prints. The look is simple, clean, and sophisticated.

PlaidBedSpread.jpg
bluePlaidChairs.jpg

lighten up with soft plaids

Low contrast, soft plaids in light neutrals make for great prints in traditional and contemporary spaces. Use these plaids to offset wainscoting in a similar color, or to add some feminine and sophistication to a creamy sofa. We love these plaids, because of their timeless quality.

PLaidWall.jpg
ContemporaryPlaid.jpg

Create Black and White Drama

Keep your black and white classy by avoiding large buffalo plaids and embracing smaller black and white plaids that create graphic drama in your space. Whether you go for an all black and white room or add color the black and white pops and works as a high impact graphic piece.

BLackandWhitePLaid.jpg

Go For Unique Colors

To keep your space fresh, use plaids that have bold color, like our Thibaut Winslow wallpaper in navy below. You can also mix things up by using more feminine colors like lavender. These plaids look great paired with more glamorous accessories and opulent artwork.

Layer a Bed Like a Designer

Learn how James Décor’s linen experts make a bed that’s fit for royalty.

Tip 1. Know Your Shams

The most beautiful beds consist of the same basic element, shams! Knowing what they are and where they go on a bed will get you started on the right foot. Shams can get a little confusing depending on what look you’re going for, and whether you're designing a king or queen bed, so here’s some tips to clear things up.

QUEENBED.jpg
KINGBED.jpg

2. Know Your Accent Pillows

An accent pillow is a decorative pillow, and they come in many different shapes. Each type can come in a variety of sizes as well. We like to stick with one style per bed, but we always recommend having a few different styles on hand so you change up the look from time to time!

AccentPillows.jpg

3. Let the Flat Sheet be Seen

For a layered effect, put your flat sheet on right side down. Pull it all the way up to the top of the bed, then fold back the sheet with your coverlet/duvet to reveal the right side of the flat sheet. This looks especially luxurious if you have some embroidered detail on the top of the flat sheet as seen in this photo. This brings us to our next tip...

4. Embroidered Details & Borders are EVERYTHING

For a high-end look, we recommend adding embroidered details or decorative borders to your bedding. At James Décor, we have a large variety of designs and colors to choose from, and our designers can help you choose just the right ones for a gorgeous custom look. Well executed design always has excellent detail work.

5. Mix in Pattern

Adding pattern to your bedding creates eye-catching layers and feels more curated. You can mix solid embroidered pieces with florals, or small stripes with a geometric pattern. Have fun with it! This is where your personality can come through.

6. Add Layers of Texture

As we transition to fall, texture is a great way to cozy up your bedroom. A fur throw draped at the foot of the bed can add a great element of texture. You can also add a bed scarf. A bed scarf is different from a throw as it spans the entire length of the bed at the foot and is purely decorative. Try a cashmere blanket, a personal comforter, or even fold a velvet coverlet at the bottom of the bed to add a different layer of texture. This is a great way to break up a lot of patterns on a bed. Stop into our showroom to browse a variety of faux fur and knit throws.

7. Make it Monogrammed

Your bedroom is a very personal place, so why not monogram your bedding? The look is ultra chic and adds a special element to remind you that you, (and everyone else) that your bedding is customized for you. This also a great idea for a wedding gift. Give the bride and groom something really lovely with a set of monogrammed sheets.

8. Use High-End Linen Wash

You wash your sheets a lot, and you want them to last a long time. That’s why at James Decor, we carry Le Blanc linen wash in our showroom. It doesn’t contain the harsh chemicals as other detergents that cause your linens to break down over time. It’s also designed to be used with cold water, which is eco-friendly and less harsh than hot water. Bonus: it smells heavenly! You can find several scents to choose from in our showroom.

How to Style with Zebra Print

Our designers dish on how to do zebra print.

ZebraRug.jpg
ZebraHead.jpg

1. Use zebra as graphic art in a black & white space.

If you gravitate to high contrast black and white furniture, then zebra print is an easy solution to add a pop of wild style in a sleek room. Adding natural elements with a graphic organic pattern like zebra print can give your space just the right amount of earthiness, while keeping your contemporary aesthetic intact. We love how zebra print looks paired with black and white artwork and furniture with clean lines. Top off the look with gorgeously layered leathers and glossy finishes for magazine-worthy design.

ZebraIdea.jpg
ZebraandLeopard.png

2. Mix zebra with other animal prints.

Layering several high-end animal prints in one space is not for the faint of heart, but the look is show-stopping! The important thing to remember when mixing animal prints is to use the right ones. There are so many animal prints out there that can look cheap or underwhelming. At James Décor we only carry and work with the best lines, so there’s never a question with our prints. Mix and match any of our pieces for a look that will have your guests' jaws dropping.

Screen+Shot+2020-08-31+at+5.04.04+PM.jpg
VG_CC06D_V924-AC.jpg

3. Pair zebra with bold color.

The graphic style of zebra print always pairs well with color. The two complement each other so well! You can style it with a multi-color gallery wall or with one bold piece like the yellow Vanguard dresser above. The bolder the color, the bigger the impact.

ZebraBench_Blue.jpg
ZebraBench2.jpg

4. Style zebra with traditional patterns.

Mix it up and pair zebra print with more traditional patterns like chinoiserie. There’s no reason that traditional spaces can’t have a touch of zebra print, but you need some contrast to go along with it. Bold prints like the chinoiserie and florals make perfect companions to striking zebra print, and the overall vibe is eclectic and smart in just the right ways.

IMG_1734.JPG
IMG_1736.JPG

5. Try zebra print in other colors.

Feeling like zebra print is too loud for your home? Not to fret. You can still have zebra in your life in the form of a more toned down print. We love these Slipper Chairs at $2,035 each by John-Richard. They still have a slight safari style, but the zebra upholstery is more subtle, and the lines of the chair are more traditional. These would look beautiful in a living room with a more neutral color palette. Stop by our showroom to see these for yourself!

Office Design

Why the Design of Our Workplaces is Important

Photo: Unsplash

Photo: Unsplash

At James Décor, our specialty is residential design. The design of the places we come home to every day is infinitely important.

What about the place we spend most of our time during the day?

That’s right — we’re talking about the office.

Like it or not, much of our time is spent sitting at desks and conference tables. We work hard in the office so we can play hard when we go home.

The world of office design is rapidly evolving. Research is showing that the design of boring places like offices can have a huge impact on how we work and, therefore, how we live.

An article on ScienceDaily about research conducted on how the environment impacts us says, “the scientists explain that well-built environments are important for well-being. A relationship to the space we're in is a fundamental human experience and so it is evident that built environments need to address everyone's needs.”

This is why fluid, collaborative spaces are quickly replacing the rigid cubicle farms we have grown accustomed to. Companies are working smarter — not harder — with innovative office design.

Interior Design is a magazine that keeps up with the ever-changing trends in interior design around us. Their May 2019 issue was dedicated solely to office design. The offices they featured and products they discovered were nothing short of inspiring.

Take Sunbrella’s headquarters in North Carolina, for example. The fabric and upholstery company converted a former mill into office space. The design included making use of natural light as much as possible. The building lets in so much light that there are two internal gardens in the office space. The gardens are two of the spaces referred to as “accidental spaces” in the office. These spaces aren’t assigned a specific use. Rather, they can be used for casual meetings or quick conversations — whatever they are needed for at the moment.

The North American headquarters for the Campari Group, a beverage company, incorporated four bars in their office space. The reception desk is an espresso bar. The office space also includes a cafe. It’s not all a party, though. The office features plenty of work spaces, like sit/stand workstations and conference rooms. However, there are no assigned desks. Employees work wherever they want to that day and store their belongings in lockers at the end of the day.

Trask Solutions, a technological and consulting company, has an office in Prague, Czech Republic, with a unique seating option — swinging chairs suspended from the ceiling. Little details like this bring a unique touch to office spaces. This keeps potentially boring work interesting.

Small environmental details can make all the difference in the quality of one’s work.

An article titled “How Your Office Space Impacts Employee Well-Being” from Forbes says, “A quality workspace design leads to a less stressful and more productive atmosphere. It’s essential that employers take the physical work environment of their employees into consideration.”

Good design doesn’t end at home. Take it to work, too. The office is an equally important place to pay attention to interior design.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Winter Design Inspiration

IMG_2365.JPG

Design inspiration can be found everywhere you look.

The changing landscapes brought about by the seasons are an easy place to see this. Bursts of color in spring, summer and fall are easy to incorporate in interior design, but what about the duller setting of winter? There is inspiration to be found even in these slow and quiet months.

Green trees, powdery snow, sparkly ice, and earthy tree bark inspire patterns and colors to create a cozy space.

Go with soft or shiny textures in winter-inspired spaces.

Color schemes include silver, white, gray, gold, blue, and green. Find a combination that works for you.
